Racism In The 80's

Here is the second installment in my series on what it's like to grow up Black in America. This story takes us to sunny Orlando, Florida in 1984. I was serving in the Navy at the time, and I was caught off guard by racist remarks from a complete stranger. Ironically, I was serving in the military to protect freedom of speech so that a person I didn't know could have the right to accost me with these racist remarks.
